Echo Canyon / American River Canyon
This area features both US Forest Service cabins and private residences. In terms of the Forest Service cabins, it is rare that a cabin has year-round use of the water system. Most tracts do not have water during the freezing season, and systems are not turned on again until the danger of freeze has passed. Typical use is Mother's Day to Halloween. The lower elevation cabins -- at 4,000 feet -- may have a longer season, but it's up to the cabin owners to decide when to turn it off and on.
Roads to the cabins are not plowed from snow. Residents can snow shoe, cross country ski or snowmobile in from the main road.
The private residences are located south of Lake Tahoe, along Highway 50 towards Placerville and Sacramento, following the American River. You'll find a mixture of privately owned land and US Forest Service lots here. Residents enjoy majestic river views, pretty mountain and meadow vistas and private settings. Both original mountain cabins and vacant lots for dream hideaways are available. Local highlights include the river, seasonal streams, proximity to Audrain Lake and Echo Lakes. And, of course, being still less than an hour away from South Lake Tahoe's nightlife and outdoor recreation.
